Living gluten-free in Baix Penedès: our selection
When we opened in 1995, finding gluten-free bread or biscuits was nearly mission impossible. Today our gluten-free aisle is one of the most complete in the region, stocked with specialist brands decades in the making. If you or someone at home has just been diagnosed coeliac or gluten-sensitive, this guide is for you.
The brands that never fail
Schär is Europe's gluten-free giant and the safest entry point: their corn flakes and pasta are indistinguishable from conventional ones. Santiveri's Noglut line is the local classic with decades behind it. And for pasta, Aproten has made shapes that hold their cooking like the real thing since 1974.
What to check on the label
Look for the crossed-grain symbol (Europe's certified gluten-free mark) or the words 'gluten-free', guaranteeing under 20 parts per million. Beware of 'may contain traces' if sensitivity is high, and remember oats — gluten-free in themselves — are often contaminated in the field: choose certified only.
Advice from the counter
A diagnosis is disorienting, but you needn't change everything overnight: start with your daily basics (bread, pasta, biscuits, breakfast cereals) and expand from there. In the shop we can order any product from our brands — ask us anytime, that's what we're here for.
