The glycyrrhizin in licorice root is fifty times sweeter than sugar, and a recognised protector of the stomach lining — which is why tradition recommends it for acidity and a delicate stomach. The 'sweet stick' children once chewed at school was, unknowingly, a proper digestive remedy.
